Project Jane was an original script written by Monica Payne, the director, and the ensemble cast. The show portrays the lives of the “Jane Collective,” an anonymous group who provided safe abortions to women, from 1969-1973. During their time of performing underground abortions, the group fulfilled over 12,000 safe abortions to people who needed it. They became known as the Abortion Counseling Service for Chicago Women's Liberation Union. In 1973 their base was raided by police, authorities had the intention of arresting doctors.
They were confused when there were no doctors on the premises. Police did not understand that the Jane’s were performing the operation themselves. They detained seven members, who became known as the “Jane Seven.” The women who were arrested never had to stand trial because that year is when abortions became legal in the United States.
